Description

Charles Lyell is one of the greatest Victorian scientific figures. His interests in the earth sciences are enduringly relevant and include issues like climate change, species diversity and the meanings of deep time. This and more are revealed in his numerous notebooks, which the University of Edinburgh is seeking to acquire.

Join this lively discussion about his and his notebooks' importance with Professor Charles W. J. Withers (Ogilvie Chair of Geography, University of Edinburgh and Geographer Royal for Scotland) and Professor James A. Secord (Professor of History and Philosophy of Science, University of Cambridge and Director, Darwin Correspondence Project).

The one hour discussion will be followed by a reception to which you are warmly invited.
