SUMMARY:Astrobiology and the Torridonian
DESCRIPTION:Mars is thought to have been habitable early throughout its history (>3 billion years\nago)\, when it sustained an atmosphere and stable bodies of liquid water at its\nsurface. Although the surface of Mars is now entirely inhospitable\, traces of a\nputative biosphere may be archived within its sedimentary rock record. The potential\nof finding fossilised traces of life on Mars has been the driving force behind its\nexploration for several decades\, and continues with the NASA Curiosity and\nPerseverance rovers\, which are currently exploring Gale and Jezero craters. A\nrecent discovery by Perseverance of organic matter associated with reduced mineral\nphases in the Neretva Vallis river channel has stimulated new interest in the\npossibility of a Martian biosphere\, and these materials have been sampled for\neventual return to Earth.\nUntil we achieve Mars Sample Return\, developing hypotheses about Mars’ early\nhabitable history requires us to harness understanding of similar localities here on\nEarth; we term such setting ‘planetary field analogues’. In this talk\, I will discuss the\nimportance of planetary field analogues for understanding ancient Martian\nenvironments\, and consider how exceptionally well-preserved fossiliferous\nsedimentary rocks from the Torridon Group of NW Scotland provide insights into\npotential habitable environments on early Mars and the types of biosignatures for\nwhich we might search following the sophisticated laboratory analysis of Martian\nsamples brought to Earth in the future. \nKeyron Hickman Lewis\, GSG Grant Awardee\, School of Natural Sciences\, Birkbeck College\, London \nKeyron has been a Research Assistant (2019–2020) \, CNRS Orléans (France) and Università di Bologna (Italy) \nAurora Research Fellow (2021–2024)\, Natural History Museum\, London \nResearch Fellow (2024–2024) \, Imperial College London \nand from 2024 a Lecturer in Planetary Exploration\, Birkbeck\, University of London \nHis research interests are \nCo-evolution of Earth and Life in the Precambrian: can we constrain the emergence of major microbial metabolisms throughout the Precambrian and their relationship with changing sedimentary environments and ocean chemistry? \nModern analogues of ancient ecosystems: How can we use extreme planetary field analogues most effectively to explain geological and ecological aspects of environments on the early Earth and Mars? \nTechnique development: How can we harness non-traditional and emerging instrumentation and data treatment (e.g. chemometrics) to shed new light on the ancient fossil record? \nPlanetary exploration: How can we effectively utilise space mission observations\, including rover and orbiter datasets\, to reconstruct past environments and habitability throughout the Solar System? \n  \n\n\n\nBook

SUMMARY:The Bearsden Shark
DESCRIPTION:In 1981 Stan Wood found and recovered\, from the Manse Burn\, a previously unknown\, metre long fossil shark which was identified as a the complete skeleton of a member of the Stethacanthidae family of prehistoric sharks. This fossil is now on display in the Hunterian Museum.   Neil Buchanan of the Bearsden Shark Group will give an overview of where the shark and Scotland were 339 mya reflecting the climate\, geography and geology. He will outline the discovery of the shark\, talk about its finder and about the Manse Burn site. He will also talk about Prof John Long’s book on the history of sharks and will report on the new sculpture project including its design\, material\, location and fundraising. The Geological Society of Glasgow is supporting this sculpture project through a grant. \nFurther Reading: \nWood S.P.\, 1982\, New basal Namurian (Upper Carboniferous) fishes and crustaceans found near Glasgow – Nature 297 pp 574-577 \nWood S.P.\, 1983\, The Bearsden Project or Quarrying for Fossils on a Housing Estate – The Geological Curator 3\, pp4 13-434 \n  \n\n\n\nBook

SUMMARY:Cromarty Residential Trip 22nd - 25th May 2026
DESCRIPTION:Bob Davidson will be joined by Danny Long to lead a 2 day geology/palaeontology themed residential excursion in the Cromarty area. \nBob is a retired oil and gas wells engineer who came to geology through industry\, training initially as a geophysical logging engineer measuring sedimentary rock properties around the world. For the past 36 years Bob has been involved in palaeontological research of the classic Devonian fishbeds of Scotland initially under the mentorship of the late Prof. Nigel Trewin. He has collaborated on 19 published works on fossil fish and is a research fellow at Aberdeen University. Bob was awarded an MBE for services to palaeontology in the 2018 new year’s honours list. \nDanny is a retired geologist who worked on clastic and carbonate rocks around the world in the oil and gas industry from the early 1980’s. Since retiring\, Danny is enjoying getting back to seeing rocks and fossils in the field across Scotland and providing assistance to Bob and other workers taking a new look at the Old Red Sandstone rocks of the Cromarty outcrops. \nThe excursion is framed around Bob and his colleagues’ recent research around Hugh Miller’s work and that of his son. In addition to the geo/palaeo part it also includes some historical interest including an artesian well and its story and a visit to St Regulus churchyard (known locally as the Pirates graveyard) where we will see an example of Millers’ stonemasonry marking his daughter’s grave. We can also visit the impressive statue of Hugh above the village. There will be a 50/50 split of history/palaeontology and we will be learning about the renewed stratigraphy of the fishbeds and the Moine intrusion. \nBob\, Danny\, et al have been busy producing new literature on the area\, their latest research also allows us to expand the trip to include the Nigg foreshore (hopefully by ferry or we will travel in own cars)\, a little appreciated locality but with very clear outcrops of the Moine overlain unconformably by a complete sequence of ORS strata containing at least 2 fishbeds. We will visit both foreshores and there will be something for everyone\, some of it hot off the press! We will also incorporate a visit to the NTS Hugh Miller birthplace museum in Cromarty. \nWe will be staying 3 nights at the Old Brewery in Cromarty https://www.cromartyartstrust.org.uk/old-brewery \nand costs are as follows:- \n£150.00 for 3 nights\, per person\, Bed only. \nMeals can be provided for us in the cafe at the Old brewery as follows; \n£15.00 for Cooked or £10 for Continental Breakfast (sat/sun/mon) \n£10.00 packed lunch \n£25.00 two-course dinner (sat/sun) \n*please let Lindsay know by email if you will be taking up the meals\, it would be nice to eat together and chat about the days plans in the morning and to chat about the days events in the evenings if possible. \n*PLUS £50.00 per person to cover the leaders costs\, this will be the DEPOSIT amount due to be paid by 9th March 2026 to confirm your space. After deposit has been paid\, no refunds will be given unless we can manage to fill your space. \n  \n\n\n\nBOOK
