SUMMARY:Fossil Hunters: Unearthing the Mystery of Life on Land (exhibition at the National Museum of Scotland)
DESCRIPTION:This is an exhibition about recently located Scottish fossils and the people who found them. \nIn 2008\, the late Stan Wood uncovered fossils in SE Scotland revealing important information about the development of land vertebrate life. The exhibition features finds\, including some very recent ones\, which provide an insight into an ancient ecosystem and help tell the story of the ‘move’ made by vertebrates from water onto land 360-345 million years ago\, starting to close the enigmatic gap in the fossil record known as Romer’s Gap. \nFind out more about the exhibition here\, and about Romer’s Gap here. \nEntry is free.

SUMMARY:Rhythms of the Jurassic (lecture)
DESCRIPTION:Professor Stephen Hesselbo\, Cambourne School of Mines \nJoint Celebrity Lecture with Edinburgh Geological Society \nThe combination of traditional stratigraphy\, increasingly sophisticated new geochemical methods and the generation of long continuous sedimentary records is yielding new insights into the history of environmental change during supposed “greenhouse” times in Earth history.  In this lecture I will explore with new data the competing cyclic influences on Jurassic Earth history\, with a particular emphasis on the carbon cycle and the formation of black shales.
