The Ballantrae region is of international importance because of the presence there of the Ballantrae Complex, an association of serpentenite, chert and pillow lavas that represents an ophiolite suite.

There are many interesting geological localities in this area. One of these is Downan Point, where there are excellent exposures of pillow lavas that indicate how they are formed, lava caves and exposures showing the relationship between massive and pillowed lavas.
