Ben Browne, who was a member of the society for 33 years, died on 25 May 2019, after a short illness.
On joining the society in 1986, Ben became totally involved in its activities. He regularly attended its monthly lectures and also gave his own talks and provided displays. He became a regular contributor to the proceedings of the society, reporting not just on its finances, but also on the many field trips in which he took part. He also took part in field trips abroad and jointly led a trip to Schiehallion and Strath Fionan.
Ben was treasurer of the society for six years in the 1990s, a vice president from 2012 until 2014, and treasurer again from 2013 until 2018. For many years he also organised the provision of tea and biscuits at the end of the monthly meetings. Ben was recently elected an honorary member of the society in recognition of his contribution to its objectives and his distinction in service.
More details of Ben’s life and achievements can be found in the obituary prepared by Maggie Donnelly, the society’s residential excursions secretary.
